Allan Bantucan - Web Designer in Japan

My Story and the Need for Multilingual Websites

In 2019, just before the pandemic, I arrived in Japan with my family. For four years, I immersed myself in Japanese life, working as a factory inspector (kensha) for car headlight and taillight components.

One of my first experiences highlighted the challenges of navigating a new culture. Fresh off the plane, hunger pangs led me to a convenience store after my shift. Although eager to make a purchase, my limited Japanese made me hesitant to enter, fearing misunderstandings and laughter. Mustering courage, I grabbed a sandwich and proceeded to the cashier.

Confident I could simply hand over money and leave, my confidence faltered. The cashier, with a friendly smile, asked, “Pointo ka–do?” Confused, my brain scrambled for five seconds. “Pointo ka–do?” A simple question – “Do you have a point card?” – became an unfamiliar phrase. Embarrassed, I mumbled “wakarimasen” (I don’t understand) and quickly left.

This experience, coupled with my over ten years of website design, development, and SEO expertise, sparked a realization. Many expats and foreign tourists likely face similar language barriers. They navigate a beautiful country but struggle to connect and access information.

Language Barrier is Costing Your Business

Rekindling My Passion for Web Design

In June 2022, I made a tough decision – it was time to pursue my passion for web design and development again. Leaving my factory job meant a period with no income, but I knew the long-term benefits would be worth it.

For years, I put my skills aside, thinking I wouldn’t return to the field. This neglect almost cost me my hard-earned knowledge. Relearning and acquiring new industry trends took dedicated months of study. During this time, providing for my family solely through income wasn’t possible.

While I had neglected these skills for a while, the foundation was still there. It took dedication and focus – months of relearning and exploring new advancements in the field. This wasn’t easy, especially with the financial pressure of supporting my family. However, my commitment to this career shift grew stronger with every milestone achieved.
The hard work paid off. After months of focused learning, I regained the confidence to approach clients and showcase my expertise. Now, I can confidently say I’m ready to tackle any website project that comes my way.

My Mission

Japan boasts an abundance of incredible products and services, readily available in stand-alone stores and supermarkets. Yet, as an expat myself, I often find myself relying on Amazon or international retailers like Shein and Temu for basic needs.

The reason? The convenience of clear English descriptions. This isn’t unique to me – countless expats and foreign tourists face similar challenges navigating the Japanese market due to language barriers. Booking hotels, enjoying movies, even ordering food can become frustrating experiences.

This is where I can help.

My mission is to empower Japanese businesses to tap into a largely untapped market: non-Japanese speaking expats and tourists. By designing multilingual websites, I bridge the language gap and unlock a wealth of potential customers. Having lived in Japan for years, I understand firsthand the frustration of deciphering Nihongo and Kanji.

Imagine this: reaching a wider audience, boosting sales, and enhancing the overall customer experience for international visitors – all through the power of multilingual websites.

By creating multilingual websites that bridge the language gap, I aim to empower businesses to unlock their full potential and reach a wider audience than ever before. Let’s create a Japan where incredible products and services are accessible and welcoming to everyone, regardless of their native language.
